Local outreach program provides assistance to children of refugees living in region

Refugee Donation

Carole Cottrill (in the red shirt), a board member of the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Apartment Association Outreach Program, delivered 35 backpacks filled with school supplies for the children of refugees who are assisted by Catholic Charities SouthWestern Ohio. CINCINNATI- The Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Apartment Association Outreach Program recently donated 35 backpacks filled with school supplies to Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio for the children of refugees living in the Greater Cincinnati area.

The children will be able to use the backpacks for the 2008-09 school year. The donation is a tremendous help to the children and the families of the refugees, most of which come to the United States with nothing more than a backpack of clothes with them, let alone school supplies, said Cindy Grieme, Outreach Program Coordinator for Catholic Charities SouthWestern Ohio.

“This is a tremendous help for these families,” Grieme said. “This donation fills one of the biggest needs for these children. It’s a great way to start the school year, especially when you see the wonderful smiles as the children start a new journey and a new way of life in our country. We are so thankful to the Apartment Outreach Association for their generosity.”

Catholic Charities SouthWestern Ohio will assist over 100 new refugees coming to the Greater Cincinnati region in 2008. Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio is the largest provider of direct resettlement services for refugees in Hamilton County and Southwestern Ohio. Over the past thirty-one years, more than 11,000 refugees have been resettled in the Greater Cincinnati area under the auspices of Catholic Charities, an affiliate of the United States Catholic Conferences Migration and Refugee Services (USCC/MRS). Donations of clothing and household items are needed to help set up the refugees as they begin their new life in a new country.

Senior Corps Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon
on August 29 at Cintas Center
Senior Corps

CINCINNATI- Catholic Charities SouthWestern Ohio is hosting its annual Senior Corps Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on Friday, August 29 at the Cintas Center of the campus of Xavier University from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Over 400 senior citizen volunteers from the Senior Corps are expected to attend the recognition program. WLWT news anchor Courtis Fuller is scheduled to serve as master of ceremonies

Catholic Charities SouthWestern Ohio is host to three programs housed under the auspices of Senior Corps: RSVP, Foster Grandparents, and Senior Companions. Senior Corps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency created to connect Americans of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to give back to their communities and their nation. CCSWO is the sole provider of all three Senior Corps programs in the region.

“Over the years, the Senior Corps programs have proved to be some of the most successful and popular programs we have at Catholic Charities,” said Dave Mikkelsen, Director of the Senior Corps programs at CCSWO. “This annual luncheon gives us the chance to honor the 500 plus volunteers that are the backbone of these programs.”

Volunteers involved in the Foster Grandparents program serve from 15-40 hours a week in schools, hospitals, correctional institutions, day-care facilities and Head Start centers around the region. They help children who have been abused or neglected, mentor troubled teenagers and young mothers, and care for premature infants and children with physical disabilities.

The Senior Companions Program matches senior volunteers with an opportunity to develop a one-on-one relationship with the elderly or homebound.

RSVPconnects volunteers age 55 and over with service opportunities in their communities that match their skills and availability. From building houses to immunizing children, from enhancing the capacity of non-profit organizations to improving and protecting the environment, RSVP volunteers put their unique talents to work to make a difference.

The media are invited to attend this annual recognition event. For more information on this press release contact Chris Gramke, Director of Marketing and Development, at (513) 241-7745 ext. 2527 or via email at cgramke@caatholiccharitiesswo.org.
