CCSWO - RSVP

Senior CorpsRSVP is part of Senior Corps, a network of national service programs that provides Americans age 55 and older the opportunity to apply their life experience to meeting community needs. RSVP volunteers serve in a diverse range of nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and faith-based groups. Among other activities, they mentor at-risk youth, tutor elementary school age children, teach English to immigrants, and lend their business skills to community groups that provide critical social services.

Eligibility

RSVP is open to people age 55 and over. Most volunteers are paired with local organizations that are already helping to meet community needs. Time commitments range from a few hours a month to almost full time, though the average commitment is four hours a week.

Volunteer Benefits

RSVP volunteers are not paid, but sponsoring organizations may reimburse them for some costs incurred during service. RSVP provides appropriate volunteer insurance coverage, and volunteers receive pre-service orientation and in-service training from the agency or organization where they are placed.

A few of the opportunities currently available include:

  1. Tutors for elementary school children: many locations and times available.
  2. Mentoring: spend quality time with a child, providing a positive adult role model.
  3. Administrative/clerical support: days and hours flexible.
  4. Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels: several locations, flexible hours.
  5. Canteen Operator: Hoxworth Blood Center.
  6. Citizens On Patrol Program: make your neighborhood a better place to live.
  7. ESOL instructor/ tutor: help immigrants and refugees with English language and American culture skills.
  8. Advocate: be a court advocate for children through ProKids, or instruct seniors to recognize Medicare fraud through ProSeniors.
